The Judy and
Line Ranch was
founded in 1887
when Roy Judy
purchased land
from the
railroad and
began raising
Shorthorn
cattle. A
generation
later, his
daughter Irma
and her husband
Azale Line took
up the family
business and
starting using
Hereford cattle.
When their son,
Doug, and his
wife, Dixie,
took the reins,
they brought in
Angus cattle to
produce a black
white face F1
cross. The
tradition
continues with
me, Darby, and
my wife, Annette
doing business
as Triangle J
Ranch.
We introduced
Simmental to the
ranch, with the
initial group
being made up of
the old red and
white spotted
cows.
We
have now
transitioned to
black-hided
cattle to
fulfill the
needs of our
customers. We
run about 600
head of
cattle--400
registered (300
Simmental and
100 Angus) and
200 commercial
cows.
Although the
majority are
black, we do
sell a small
number of red,
non-diluter
bulls each year.
The bulls range
from 1/2 blood
Simm/Angus to
purebred
Simmental and
Angus.
The Triangle J
Ranch Sale is
located on the
family farm, 35
miles northwest
of Kearney, NE.
The sale is
annually the
last Sunday in
January.
Approximately
100 yearling
bulls sell. We
do all the
preparations for
the sale from
getting the
cattle ready, to
preparing the
sale catalog, to
cooking the meal
for sale day.
Commercial
cattlemen are
the main focus
of our breeding
program. Most of
our customers
are local, but
we do have a few
out-of-state
buyers who come
back year after
year.
Two of the most
notable bulls to
come out of our
sale are TJ The
Gambler and TJ
Alta's blend. TJ
The Gambler sold
in the 2000 sale
to Pineview and
Bell Farms in
Burlington, NC,
who later leased
the bull to ABS
Global. TJ
Alta's Blend was
the top
halfblood bull
from the 2002
sale. He went to
Alta Genetics,
which is now
Genex, Inc.
We attribute our
family's success
to our intensive
artificial
insemination
(AI) and embryo
transfer (ET)
programs. The
majority of our
females are
AI-bred in the
spring, and we
flush two or
three donor cows
each year. From
the flushes, we
are able to put
75-100 embryos
into some of our
commercial cows.
We handle the
synchronizing
ourselves, but
Jim Koenig of
Grand Island, NE
is the
embryologist who
does the actual
flushing and
transfers the
embryos for us.
Our goal is to
produce females
with fleshing
and milking
ability that
raise calves
that weigh
heavier at
weaning. We also
look for
moderately
framed, thick,
high-performing
cattle. Polled,
solid-colored
cattle also are
preferred. Not
only do we
strive to
provide our
customers with
more uniform
cattle, but we
also try to
follow up with
our customers
after the sale.
When we aren't
tending to the
cattle, we're
busy with our
children's
interests in
agriculture,
school, and
sports. We have
three sons,
Travis, 12,
Dillan, 9, and
J.D., 5. This
was Travis'
forth year in
4-H and Dillan's
first. The boys
raise breeding
heifers and
steers and have
competed in
local progress
shows and the
county fair.
They are all
becoming
increasingly
active in
livestock
judging through
4-H and other
state contests.
They are getting
more interested
in our operation
and cattle
bloodlines by
participating in
these events.
Four generations
have taken their
place as the
head of the
ranch, so we are
excited about
the kids
becoming
involved.
Grandpa still
helps check the
cows, water and
fence. Dad and I
tend to the
cows. Mom takes
care of the
day-to-day
office tasks.
Annette, who
also works as a
dental
hygienist, helps
with photos,
registrations,
and working
cattle. The boys
pitch in
wherever and
whenever they
are needed.
For more than
100 years, our
family has
survived in
central Nebraska
through our
commitment to
our customers
and breeding
quality cattle.
We welcome
visitors any
time. We would
love to give you
a herd tour!
